Meet “M4,” a temporary installation envisioned by architects Francisco Magnone & Luciano Lopez. Designed in 2017, it is meant to explore the historic space-time continuum and the still-growing field of ephemeral architecture. It is located in Montevideo, Uruguay.
The project was completed as a Final Project for the duo’s Bachelor’s Degree from the Facultad de Arquitectura, Diseño y Urbanismo from the Universidad de la Republica in Montevideo, and is intended to shorten the distance between architecture and current scientific thought. ‘It is positioned between an RTA (ready to assemble) and a hyper-specific solution; a nest that is at the same a cave’, explain the architects. It centers essentially in its status as “open architecture,” understood as a combination of constructive materials and techniques that are capable of generating spaces lacking in any symbolic or monumental meaning.
Installed in the courtyard of the university for a period of seven days, the temporary structure is comprised of a minimum space module on a multifunctional platform. It prides itself in its adaptability, capable of changing in order to fulfill a number of different roles and fit in various contexts, and its ephemeral quality ensures that it can exist and depart its location without leaving any footprint behind. The main module measures 2.44×2.44×2.44 and is set upon a 12 m2 platform.
