Using feng shui guidelines for the layout of your dining room will have numerous beneficial effects. First of all, you will instantly feel peace and acceptance when walking into a feng shui dining room. (You will also feel a stimulated appetite, hopefully.) This is due in large part to the layout of the dining room – items will be where they most make sense, where they are the most functional, and positioned in such a way that will bring the maximum comfort to those dining in the space.

Here are some tips on using feng shui to lay out your dining room for optimal health and happiness.

Separate dining room – As has been mentioned, a feng shui dining room is its own separate space…even if it is located within the trifecta of open concept great rooms (e.g., kitchen, dining room, living room). Consider using aesthetic room dividers to create some sort of separation – open shelves or a translucent folding screen will do the trick beautifully.

Area rug – One way to help a feng shui dining room maintain its identity is to add in an area rug underneath the dining table. This helps with sound control as well, which heightens the enjoyment of dinnertime conversation.

Plants as visual (and psychological) dividers – Another way to separate the dining room, if not completely and physically at least visually and mentally, is to group or line some potted plants between the dining room and other nearby spaces. Strategically positioning a tall houseplant between two different zones helps to maintain the vitality of the qi within each space.

Same-level kitchen – It is best for a feng shui dining room to have the dining room on the same floor as the kitchen. This creates a more seamless and functional flow, with the preparing and serving and eating of food. And if there’s one thing feng shui is all about, it’s maximizing positive flow.

Nearby kitchen – Furthermore, where possible, have the dining room be located as near to the kitchen as possible. This is something that open concept floor plans do have in common with feng shui layout. It simply makes life easier and more comfortable to transport food just a short distance from the kitchen to the dining room.

Spacious ceilings – A feng shui dining room will maintain a comfortably high (spacious) ceiling space. The reason this is emphasized in feng shui is that people tend to be able to relax and feel more comfortable in a room that feels more spacious. Higher ceilings, to an extent, provide this feeling of spaciousness. Even if you simply use paint to raise the ceiling visually, your dining room will benefit, according to feng shui.

Mirror’s light – Mirrors are a favorite decorating tool of feng shui, and the dining room is no exception. The dining room is a lovely place to incorporate a mirror, because it amplifies not only the natural light that (hopefully) streams through the dining room’s windows, but also increases the tablescape and the feeling of grand dining. What’s more, a mirror helps to make the feng shui dining room feel larger, which adds to the overall comfort of diners.

Sufficient dining table – This layout tip is probably a no-brainer, but it must be stated that in the feng shui dining room, the dining table will be large enough to seat everyone comfortably. No one wants to eat, let alone linger, at a place where they feel cramped and squished. The positive dining experience, conversation, and overall atmosphere of the feng shui dining room really probably starts with a sufficiently sized dining table.

Adequate ventilation – The feng shui dining room will be laid out in such a way that air flow (ventilation) will be sufficient for freshness and health. Positive energy flow, in feng shui, often equates with the flow of ventilated air, so it makes sense that this should be a priority. Be sure that dining room windows (or skylight!) can open, and are opened regularly to freshen the air, and that air can flow in and around and through the dining room furniture.

Sufficient sunlight – While not all dining rooms have available sunlight, the feng shui dining room will be located in a part of the home where this is a possibility. Sunlight is a natural energy booster, and feng shui guidelines state that a dining room will be most healthful when, in addition to being well ventilated, there is sunlight available to the space.

Censored view of bathrooms/doors – A feng shui dining area steers clear of any hint of a bathroom. There should be no toilet doors visible from the dining table, or even the dining room if at all possible. This is because the sight of bathrooms in feng shui is said to bring unhealthiness, particularly in a space where food is being prepared and eaten. Use screens if this is a problem architecturally in your dining room.

No door face-offs – The dining room door should avoid facing the front door to the house in feng shui. If the two doors face each other, it creates a vacuum of qi, and all that positive, happy energy heads straight from the dining room out the door. Conversely, negative outdoor energy flows directly into the dining room and affects the dining experience when the front door is opened. So a feng shui dining room door avoids facing the front door of the home.

Beware ceiling beams – Feng shui generally recommends avoiding requiring people to sit under ceiling beams whenever possible. While ceiling beams are a hot interior design trend right now, they are not conducive to good feng shui when they lie directly above where someone will be sitting. It results in discomfort, and even poor safety and health, for the seated people. If you do have ceiling beams in your dining room, consider minimizing the contrast between the beams and ceiling color (light with light, dark with dark).
