The season is changing and with it, decor tastes are shifting. As we move from a light and airy sensibility to comfort-focused desire in the colder period ahead, new trends emerge. This fall there are a number of items that are gaining in popularity and showing up in designer rooms everywhere. Here, we show you 14 trends to incorporate into your own home. Find the ones that appeal to you and adapt them for some fresh looks in your living space.
Rich Colors
Rich jewel tones and deep earthy colors fit well with cooler weather and can be played up to increase the coziness factor. From deep orange and earthy browns to vibrant emerald green and red, all can be the base for a richly colored space. Perhaps you have a large piece of furniture to work around. If not, try adding larger accessories or temporary window treatment to include rich colors in your home.
Earthy Elements
Earthy fall decor doesn’t have to include the stereotypical baskets of pinecones and wreaths of leaves. Try different styles of accessories and small furnishings to add a natural element to any room. For table tops, use containers fashioned from natural elements or vases full of earthy decor like cotton branches. Pick some candles that have a natural look or incorporate photo realistic pieces like these soft furnishings and cushions into your decor.
Brass and Bronze
Some type of metal is almost always in style and right now it’s brass and bronze. Less glitzy and shiny, these metals have a homier, elemental feeling and provide a warm glow. Beyond accessories, lighting is a great way to add these metals to your decor and the fixtures can have brass and bronze accents or feature them in the entire construction.
Gold Accents
It might be the season for earthier decor, but shiny gold is still very popular. It’s easy to incorporate because it doesn’t have to be a dominant accent. If you typically prefer more understated styles, choose smaller touches of this glamorous metal such as table legs, drawer hardware, accessories and lighting. Whether your decor tastes run toward the traditional or contemporary, many brands have incorporated gold accents. Otherwise, really go for the god and choose a piece of gilded furniture.
Chunky Knits
Just like a warm oversized sweater, chunky knits in the home are great for encouraging curling up and cuddling. They’re casual and oh-so-comfortable for anywhere in the house. From big cushions to arm knit pillows and throws, items knit with a hefty yarn and nubby texture are all about fall.
Accent Ceilings
Ceilings are an often-neglected surface in a home’s interior. Judiciously used, accent ceilings can be a dramatic tool for elevating a room’s decor. Try painting the ceiling in an unexpected, earthy tone, or add texture accents like moldings or tiles. You can also use unique lighting to create a certain mood or celestial feeling.
Fire
One the four basic elements and probably the one that appeals to our most primal nature, fire is a very popular home decor feature right now. Once limited to houses or apartment that were lucky enough to have a wood-burning fireplace, now anyone can have the ambiance of dancing flames. New technologies use alternative fuels and even water vapor to recreate the look of an open flame, making it possible to have a fireplace in literally any part of any room.
Cozy Nooks
No matter how large or small a home, a cozy little space where you can curl up and read, enjoy a cup of tea or just watch the world go by is a big draw. Window seats and alcoves are natural places for a cozy nook. Just add a comfortable seat cushion and a variety of textured pillows that beckon you to sink in and you’ve got it. There’s just something about the feeling of your own little space that makes nooks special.

Fall Florals and Greenery
Florals are really big in fashion right now and they are gaining in home decor as well — and the same with greenery. Adding natural elements like these immediately brighten and enliven a space. Whether you choose printed throw rugs, living plants or an entire garden wall, nature inside can help keep the long cold season at bay.
Handcrafted Ceramics
Hand-thrown pots and chunky mugs are just some of the handcrafted ceramics that are currently in vogue. Even modern decor styles can incorporate handcrafted ceramics that have an artisanal feeling. More because of the method than the material, ceramic pieces are artsy and different. In today’s world of mass production, items created by hand provide a vibe that you can’t buy at the department store.
Handmade Accessories
The appeal of hand-made pieces goes far beyond ceramics too. There’s just something about an accessory that was patiently and expertly made the feels homey and heartwarming. Most regions have plenty of arts and crafts fairs during the fall, making it easy to shop for hand-made pieces that appear to you. From small plant hangers to larger woven wall hangings or artisanal accessories, adding these to your space does far more than personalize your home.
Velvet
Velvet is another material that is dominating the fashion runways — and the interior design market. Chairs, sofas, cushions, and any upholstery you can imagine is being done in this luxe fabric. From bold hues to subdued tones, velvet and its soft and luxurious feel is extremely popular for all rooms of the house. Not time for new furniture? Try some velvet pillows instead.
Freshen your home’s look with any of these trends for Fall 2017. They are all versatile, stylish and amazingly adaptable.
