Base Arquitetura, an architectural firm based in Morro da Fumaça, in the state of Santa Catarina, has designed this home in Espinho, a town approximately 20 kilometers away from Porto, Portugal. The home is almost monolithic in nature, with a flat concrete façade and a timber sliding door that opens up into the interior of the structure. The minimalistic style of the exterior architecture is echoed in the style of the surrounding gardens, creating a general sense of tranquility and peace.
By opening the doors, the residents are able to turn the landscaping surrounding the home into an extension of the interior. This is aided by the fact that the materials used on these sliding doors and the home façade – timber and concrete – are used on the interior furnishings, walls, and floors, so as to create a sense of continuity between indoor and outdoor.
The color palette used is limited to the soft brown of the wood, the white of the walls, and the gray of the upholstery used in the furniture and rugs. This limitation in tones easily allows the interior designers to create a sense of continuity throughout the various rooms of the home, facilitating the transition from one room to the other.
