This enlargement of an old farm is located in Villanders, South Tyrol, Italy. The set, which consists of two uniform structures, was constructed at a slight incline. Preserved in originally primitive conditions, it is a good example of the “paired farm” typical of the slopes of the area. The residential house, with its stone roof and shed and its impressive steep thatched roof, is an authentic representation of life in a bygone era.

The reconstruction did not come immediately. Instead the owner decided to move to the place and acclimate to the new space. The decision to preserve part of the history of the place was made two years later.

However, some aspects of modern life had to be incorporated and a balance was sought between contemporary life and historical authenticity.

The new brick-built building was designed to join directly to the floor of the existing house below the west-facing terrain, connecting the old and the new.

Thanks to the wide façade, the new lounges and bedrooms enjoy a spectacular view over the Eisack valley and the high peaks of the Dolomites. The open spaces and the skylights present an exciting contrast. Skylights allow the rooms to be filled with natural daylight.
