Murray Legge Architecture, based out of Austin, Texas, USA, designed this poolside pavilion in La Grange, a town in Fayette County. The project was completed in 2017. The pavilion is an addition to an already existing home – a hillside house with views over the surrounding forest and farmland. The pavilion was constructed in order to provide shade for the adjacent pool and its resting areas, as well as a dining and kitchen space.

The main challenge was the existing landscape. The site was already surrounded by very tall, gnarly trees which both the client and the firm wished to preserve. In order to do this, Murray Legge Architecture arranged the pavilion structure to avoid their bases, as well as added holes in the wooden canopy so their branches and trunks could pass through.

Three thick columns, one of which holds a fireplace, support the roof, as well as a series of thinner poles around the perimeter.

The entire structure is perched atop a low hill, so that the infinity pool is aligned with the tops of the trees that surround it and grow at the foot of the slope, giving us the illusion that we are floating in front of the gorgeous surrounding landscape.
