Wall hangings are definitely having a moment, so I wanted to share a quick DIY tassel wall hanging that you can make from a few simple supplies. This is a great project because you can adapt it to suit your yarn weight, dowel size and color scheme. You could even make this DIY with rope or bakers twine and a drift wood stick instead of a dowel. It really depends what look you are going for.

You will need:

  • Wooden dowel

  • Chunky yarn

  • Standard weight yarn in matching (or almost matching) colour

  • White yarn

  • Scissors

How to make a tassel:

Start by cutting 6 lengths of the chunky yarn to around 10 inches.

Wrap the lighter weight yarn multiple times around the middle of the yarn bundle.

Fold the yarn in half so the wrapped section creates a loop. Continue to wrap down the lengths of yarn.

Once your tassel feels securely wrapped and has no gaps in the yarn, tie the end off and cut the end. Trim the bottom of the chunky yarn tassel to make sure the ends are even.

Make 4 more tassels using the same technique. Trim them so they are all the same length.

Using the white yarn (I used a cotton one) tie the tassels along the dowel with even spacing. You can vary the length of the white yarn or if you prefer, they can all be made the same length.

Take a length of the white yarn and tie at the edges of the dowel to create a hanging string.

What do you think? I love the colour of this yarn – it was actually left over from a knitted hat project so this is a great stash busting project!
