This house was designed for a couple with their two puppies who had spent some time living in a rural area on the outskirts of the city, in a house that eventually became too big for them. They decided to look for a smaller space, one which was located in the city as they wanted to return to the growing vibrancy and culture of the city.

It is located on the northern edge of the Madison Valley neighborhood, adjacent to the Washington Park Arboretum strip, but within walking distance of the center. The architectural firm mw|works architecture + design, with architects Eric Walters, Steve Mongillo and Suzanne Stefan, began work in 2017.

The new project would distill their way of life in a smaller space, adapted to their tastes and activities.

The design requirements focused on a simple and modern structure with a purity of materials and a quiet and relaxing palette, built with a modest budget. It had to be open, full of light and private, but also transparent and open to the views of the landscape. Above all, the host prepared a tranquil design integrated with the landscape that would create a tangible calm in the home.
