Chaoyang Park Plaza, a 120 meter high mixed use development rising in the Central Business District of Beijing, China, is almost nearing completion. The buildings contain over 120,000 square meters of commercial, office, and residential space, as well as sprawling public gardens. The project has been carried out by the Chinese architectural firm MAD architects.
The architectural design of the buildings, with their organic yet futuristic curved shapes, is heavily influenced by the mountainous landscape of China, often depicted in traditional Chinese shan shui scenic paintings. The structures are also slightly asymmetric, just as no two mountains look exactly the same. The ridges that run all over their surface are meant to imitate the effects of erosion or other forces of nature. These not only add to the beauty of the structures, but also serve to enhance their verticality, as well as facilitate the addition of a ventilation and filtration system that draws air inside.
The buildings also have a series of high rise terraces, which will have stunning views over the adjacent Chaoyang Park, one of the largest parks in the city, further emphasizing this relationship between modern architecture and the organic, natural environment that characterizes China.
