The owners of this narrow home, measuring a mere 11 feet in width, and located in Brooklyn, New York, USA, affronted an enigma that many young families in New York eventually encounter: the possibility of sacrificing location in favor of space. Having lived in this home for the last eight years, however, its owners, a jewelry designer and his two children, took the decision to remain in the neighborhood and renovate the home, which covers a total area of 1000 square feet, or some 93 square meters.

And so Office of Architecture began to work on this project and began the home’s remodeling, ending up with a home that now has double the space that it originally had.

The narrowness of the space presented a hurdle for the architects in charge of the project, as they needed to create extra surface area without using any more lot space. As such, they added two new levels to the existing two storey structure, creating space for a master bedroom and a renovated cellar.

A new entrance was also designed, going through the basement, as well as an additional laundry room and storage space. On the ground floor, the architects placed an open living room by a family room, where the old entrance once stood. Beside it sits a dining room. This is just one of many Brooklyn homes that have been renovated to accommodate young families.
