This beautiful mid-century house had less than a thousand square feet (847.0 ft2, to be exact). Despite this, its privileged location, on a hill in Montgomery County, in the state of Maryland, United States, surrounded by thick forests, made it attractive.

It has high privacy and, in spite of the small space meant for a family of four, the clients acquired the property as soon as they saw it. However, 5 years later and with children quickly approaching adolescence, they began to consider an expansion of the house. To accomplish this, they had the help and advice of the Architecture Studio Studio Twenty Seven Architecture who, with the help of their professionals, John K. Burke-Principal in Charge, Niki Livingston-Project Designer, and Claire Barrows-Project Architect, went to work and managed to give the family the desired home.

The clients wanted to maintain the existing characteristics of the house as much as possible when renovating to add living space. The simple volumes and details were all important. After all, these were the design features that first attracted them to the house and property and did not want to lose these design features in the renovation process.
Equally important was to preserve the views from the existing living spaces towards the outside. These views had become defining characteristics of why the property felt like home.
The house has doubled in size, but the atmosphere of the site is preserved.
