You won’t believe that but a small dwelling of only 45 square meters can contain everything necessary! This Beijing home by architect Christian Taeubert proves that: even many occupants can feel comfortable in it.

The architect opted for the ‘house in house’ concept stripping the existing home down to the base and using it to protect the new site from the rain. It also helped to provide the owners with one of the most essential needs in Beijing: clean indoor air. High quality windows keep the envelope as air-tight as possible, so there’s controlled ventilation in order to prevent a stale air environment. The installed energy recovery ventilation system ensures a comfortable room climate and a controlled flow of clean air.

The exterior of the new house was designed as an introverted façade, as the courtyard could not be utilized as a quality space for social gathering. Inside there are four bedrooms, a living room, dining room, mezzanine reading room, kitchen and bathroom. The ‘house in house’ concept gave a contemporary look to the dwelling. Every inch of space is used to advantage here, and I totally love the mezzanine level idea to use it as a kids’ bedroom, a play space or for any other purpose. The bedrooms are very small, there’s only a bed placed there, and in some of them the bed is substituted with a convertible couch that can be used for sleeping during the night and as a sofa during the day. The bathroom is small and simple, done in black and white, it’s a very functional space.
