This old building, dating from 1925 and formerly a nursery that had been abandoned, has been converted to create wonderful spaces out of what was a structure in disuse. It is located in Leiden, The Netherlands, a city in the Dutch province of South Holland known for its centuries-old architecture.
The architects preserved much of the original details during the restructuring process, creating open spaces that are filled with abundant natural light. The area where the lounges were formerly located has now been converted into three separate rooms.
It has high ceilings, allowing the air to flow, as well as skylights that allow the entrance of natural light into the space.
The converted schoolhouse also has sustainable design features such as rooftop solar panels, improved building insulation, and centrally controlled lighting, as well as climate, shading, and security systems that allow occupants to control every aspect of the interior space.
Its exterior of red brick walls aged by time almost seems to tell us stories of the past of this structure.
In its interior, modern furniture creates a striking contrast between the old structure and the current style of its design. In each space, we have the opportunity to observe how the old and the new coexist in perfect harmony.
