Curtains are an effective and simple way of separating a large area into smaller spaces. I bet what you’re picturing right now is a messy decor and curtains that look like bed sheets. That’s not at all what this is all about. You’d be surprised how elegant curtain room dividers can actually be if you put a little thought into this design strategy. It’s one of the many room divider ideas that we find interesting so today we’ll show some of the interior designs that inspired us to write this article.

Check out this casual and stylish division between the lounge space and the dining area. The curtain is merely suggesting a separation between the spaces and doesn’t actually offer much privacy. It is however, surprisingly efficient.

Curtains are also useful when you want to integrate a sleeping area into a multifunctional space without using solid walls. They’re a great alternative for bedroom wall dividers and you can see here that they can also look very elegant.

Here’s another example of a shared zone which is both a living room and a bedroom. A simple white curtain acts as a divider between them, offering visual privacy and concealing the sleeping area when needed.

For the minimalist contemporary homes an idea can be to use something like this instead of the classical fabric curtain. It’s a curtain divider that in this case frames the living area and forms a sort of hallway on the other side.

In some cases it’s possible to use the layout of a space in your favor like here for example. This space was already a sort of extension, featuring windows on three sides. The perfectly positioned ceiling beam made it easy to add curtains to frame the space.

This is a woven wire metal divider, hence its perfectly straight and heavy character. It’s used here to visually separate the kitchen from the rest of the open floor plan. It’s in fact a sliding room divider which allows the spaces to become one whenever desired.

How about a curtain divider for a cozy corner nook. The curtain could curve and turn the nook into a super cozy and intimate spot, perfect for reading a book or watching a movie.

Shared bedrooms don’t offer much privacy to those using it but a simple curtain divider can solve that. It works out great in this particular case because the layout of the room is also organized in such a way to facilitate that.

A possibility is also to remove a solid wall or a door that separates two areas and to connect the spaces visually. A set of curtains can act as dividers whenever some extra privacy is needed.

Curtain dividers are very practical when space is limited. In other words, if you have a small home, you could benefit from removing the walls between certain rooms and using curtains as dividers instead.

In the context of this industrial-style bedroom, the sliding fabric curtain contrasts with the rest of the decor and gives the sleeping area an extra touch of warmth and comfort. The wood pattern on the walls has a similar effect.

The curtains should match the style chosen for the interior decor. For example, in a rustic, farmhouse-style home like this one, the curtains can feature a floral motif or can be made of linen or burlap fabric.

This is a traditional setting, a section of a bedroom which could have served as a separate balcony if a wall was in place. This configuration opens the bedroom directly to the views and the curtains have the role of regulating the amount of light that enters.

How about this interesting bedroom configuration? There’s a sleeping area and a cozy lounge space with access to a balcony. They’re all part of the same open floor plan. There’s a semi-divider between them and a curtain which can provide additional privacy.

Long, heavy curtains can also be used to close off a certain space to make it more cozy and welcoming. Here, for example, curtains can enclose a lounge area turning it into an intimate nook.

Using curtains to separate the kitchen from the dining or living area can turn out to be very practical. The curtains give a sense of privacy and comfort, even if they don’t block the sound.

You can use curtain dividers in lots of different ways and in lot of different settings, whether it’s to give the dining area an intimate feel or to conceal a bedroom in the main social area.

Another possibility is to use curtains to visually separate a bedroom from its en-suite bathroom. It would be a casual and chic way of providing privacy and of maintaining cohesion between the spaces.

Curtain dividers are usually custom-made. They’re designed to perfectly suit the space and to match the needs and stylistic preferences of those using the area. However, certain configurations can allow the use of standard curtains and sliding mechanisms. You can check out some of the selection of Ikea room dividers or put together a set yourself.
