Folding chairs are practical no matter how big or small your home is and that’s because they’re always great to have around just in case or to use in multipurpose spaces or small rooms. We all know those classic foldable chairs that everyone has and while they don’t necessarily look bad, they don’t stand out in a very fashionable way either. After the post on stacking chairs, we’re now back with a big list of folding chair designs that’s guaranteed to make you curious to find out more about them and to inspire you to get some for your own home.

Let’s start with a simple design inspired by classical folding chairs. This one is called Klapp and it’s a chair designed by Steffen Kehrle. Its design is very basic, the whole point being to offer a lightweight and easily foldable frame with legs in extruded aluminum and a seat and backrest available in wood or plastic.

You can find a bunch of affordable and pretty good-looking chairs at Ikea. One of them is Terje, a very simple chair that folds to take up less space when you don’t need it. It comes in six different colors so you can even mix and match them if you want to create a colorful and fun decor.

Another option is Nisse, another simple and practical Ikea chair. Like the others, it folds almost flat and that means you can neatly store it in a wall niche, behind the door and pretty much anywhere else you find the room for it. Check out the available colors to see which one would look best in your home.

Simplicity is usually the key to a successful folding chair design and that’s why we find Ciak so great. It may not look like much but this minimalist frame is perfectly optimized to fold flat and to be stable and comfortable when unfolded. It’s a chair that’s modern and very versatile.

A lot of times the focus on this type of chairs is on the foldable frame and not as much of comfort or ergonomics. With Patan things are a bit different. This chair was designed to first of all be comfortable and the fact that it folds is just a practical bonus that makes it ever more practical and versatile.

While most folding chairs don’t look like much when in their compact form, Fläpps is special. This is a chair that folds flat and when that happens an beautiful and eye-catching image takes shape. that’s because the birch plywood panels that make up its frame are printed on both sides with colorful motifs.

This is the Fieldchair, a folding garden chair that looks funky and stylish whether it’s folded or not. It’s a chair made of wood, with a simple, geometric design meant to be comfortable and ideal for casual outdoor settings but also for cozy interior areas.

The creative mind behind the design of this elegant chair is Michael Robbins, an artist and woodworker who enjoys reinventing classical pieces. One of them is this A Frame Dining Chair. It looks like your regular old folding chair with on a closer inspection you’ll notice that the backrest is made of leather which introduces a new texture, giving the chair an elegant allure while keeping its design simple.

Aren’t these bistro chairs simply charming? They’re cute, simple and versatile and they have a rustic allure that allows them to make spaces such as the dining chair or kitchen feel extra cozy. The Portside Dining Chair has a wooden frame with a wire brushed finish and a fabric seat and backrest that let the air pass through, ensuring the user’s comfort even on a hot day.

Using folding chair for the outdoor spaces is very practical because they can be stored away when not needed or when the weather get bad. That means a lightweight and compact design is preferred. The Tolland chair is pretty great in that sense, featuring a durable yet sleek metal frame and a wooden seat and back.

As its design suggests, the Nokori Folding Chair puts an emphasis on comfort while also being optimized for space-efficiency. Its look is inspired by mid-century furniture. The frame is made of wood and curves gently to offer the user a relaxing position.

When Knauf and Brown designed the Profile Folding Chair, they made sure to take out all the elements they didn’t like about most folding chairs already on the market and to redesign this piece with a simpler, more practical and harmonious look and structure. As a result, the chair is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, it’s easy to store when folded, sturdy and durable as well as quite beautiful.

Most folding chairs are somewhat space-efficient but don’t exactly fold perfectly flat nor are their frames very thin. This Folding Chair is nothing like that. First of all, it folds completely flat and that’s extremely important for tiny spaces. Moreover, it looks pretty great and is also comfortable thanks to the padded seat and back.

Space-efficiency is also a defining characteristic of the Flipp Chair which was designed by Mhd Al Sidawi. The design of the chair is modern and very simple. The rectangular base provides stability and the entire frame is optimized to fold in and out easily. The chair as a whole is lightweight and great as extra seating around the house.

This is Zac, a chair from the Zic Zac collection designed by Raffaello Galiotto. Everything about its design suggests a garden chair that’s as practical as it is beautiful. The chair is made of fiberglass and polypropylene and comes in ten funky colors. Pair it with the garden table from the same collection and fold it for easy storage when you’re not using it.

If you prefer the classical, mainstream folding chair designs but at the same time want something a bit special, there are plenty of models to choose from and this is one of them. It’s a chair designed by Mark Daniel out of solid rubberwood. The legs are slightly tapered and the seat and backrest slightly curved for increased comfort. Its name is Spare.

The Butterfly chair is a classic. Originally designed in 1938, it inspired a lot of great pieces. This is a version with a natural leather hide seat on a collapsible hairpin frame. It has the casualness of similar folding chair but also the elegance of a timeless furniture piece. found on cb2.

Its name says it all. Con Fort is a modern folding chair designed by Maurizio Galante and Tal Lancman in 2017. Its frame is made of aluminum tubes, the seat is thin and slender and the backrest is slightly folded for maximum comfort. Thanks to the protective nanoceramics treatment, this folding chair can be used both indoor and outdoor with no risk of damage.

Can you believe that this chair was designed in 1964? Its simplicity, versatility and the fact that it’s foldable allowed the April chair to become a timeless piece that still appreciated to this day for its characteristics and looks.

Another timeless design is that of the D.270.1 chair which was first introduced in 1970 by its creator, Gio Ponti. Back then the design was quite innovative, offering people versatility and mobility which were rare in most furniture from that time. Recently the chair was reissued by Molteni&C along with the armchair version. They’re available in new finishes and with fabric, leather or wicker seats and backrests.

The Ripiego is the type of folding chair that you don’t mind adding to the living room or dining area because it looks chic and stylish without a lot of attention going into this part of its design. The metal frame folds for easy storage and the seat and backrest, whether you choose the wood or the Vitrex version, are simple and stylish enough to look great anywhere.

The Hanger Chair is one of the best pieces of furniture for small spaces. Unlike other types of folding chairs, this one is actually easy to store. Not only that it folds perfectly flat and has a thin frame but its backrest forms a hanger at the top which allows several of these chairs to be stored on a rod, much like clothes.

Have you ever thought of storing your furniture on the wall? Designer Karl Malmvall did and this is what he came up with: a set of folding chairs which can be placed on the wall and displayed as decorations. It’s an interesting way of saving floor space and a way to fill an empty wall. Each chair comes with a small hook. Both the Step and the Step Mini can thus be stored/ displayed on walls with ease.

Most chair and stool designs are pretty straightforward meaning that you have to choose one or the other based on your needs. However, designer Krystian Kowalski created a piece that serves both purposes. Chair/Stool is a foldable chair that doubles as a stool and you can transform it by simply moving the tab at the bottom of the wooden backrest into a slit found in the middle of the seat.

Having a foldable lounge chair that you can take with you out in the garden, on the porch or even on trips is pretty cool and also a bit difficult since there aren’t so many models to choose from. This one from Todd St. John is quite nice, featuring a solid walnut frame and a woven strap seat and backrest. There’s even a matching footstool, also foldable, that you can use it with.

The story of this folding chair designed by Mogens Koch is pretty interesting. The Folding Chair was designer for a contest where the request was to offer additional seating options for churches by reinterpreting the traditional folding stool and giving it a modern update. It can also be used in residential spaces as extra living room seating or outdoors in protected spaces.

This sculptural chair is called Mash and, as you can see, its folding mechanism is pretty special and unusual. The designer Alexander Seifried came up with the idea after seeing the mechanism on a chair in an old pub. He then applied the same concept on a more modern version of the chair, reviving the original in a unique way.

The Cabourn folding chair keeps the elegant and robust character of traditional furniture alive. You can find it in 26 types of wood with both light and dark finishes and with the seat and backrest available in indoor or outdoor fabric as well as in leather. Each combination is special in its own way.

This is the folding chair designed by Naoto Fukasawa. As you can see, it’s a piece defined by simplicity above all else. The slightly curved backrest prevents the chair from becoming flat when stored yet the compromise is worth the comfort gained.

When he designed the Narin chair, David Irwin wanted to create a folding chair inspired by traditional pieces but with a less boring and mainstream look. The things that make this particular piece special are its lightweight yet solid and durable frame and its fluid and chic form. All of these elements make the chair highly versatile.

The Portofino chair was designed for casual and breezy outdoor spaces like this one although that doesn’t mean it can’t look great indoors as well. Its linear and geometric frame is made of wood and its backrest and armrests feature removable fabric covers. The seat pad is made of polyurethane and polyester fabric.

Initially, the beautiful and extravagant Lotus chair was designed in 1980 by Romuald Ferens. It won the big prize at the furniture fair it was presented at yet it never went into production….at least until now. Politura is producing the chair for the first time. Check out its unique design.

How can you not enjoy this chair when its name is actually Enjoy? It was designed by Claudio Dondoli and Marco Pocci and it’s suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. You can find it in several colors, both neutrals and bold tones. The backrest has this carved-out slot in it that actually serves as a handle.

Folding chairs with leather seats have something special. Even if their design is casual, they always have this elegant allure which allows them to fit nicely even in formal environments. The Ludlow chair is the perfect example. It has a sleek metal frame and a hammock0style seat and together these elements complement each other perfectly.

Most folding chair designs focus on practicality in the detriment of comfort…but not the Fold chair. This one is as comfortable as any lounge chair and on top of that it’s foldable so it can be stored away when not needed. It’s the perfect chair for small spaces and a great one to use as an extra seat for guests.

The Nomad Chair is a classic piece which has been around for quite some times and still manages to keep up with the trends by being timeless. The frame is made of moso bamboo and the seat and backrest are available in canvas or leather. You can easily pack the  chair flat and store it or transport it so you can always be prepared.

Last but not least, Lilly’s Chair is a stylish and highly practical folding chair mad entirely of bamboo. Its seat curves up at the sides and the backrest curves back and they’re attached to a durable and sculptural frame. In addition, the back section of the seat in inserted into the frame when the chair is folded down.
