This self-designed upscale hotel was originally purchased in 2012, when it was only a run down 6 bedroom apartment covering an area of 600 square meters. It is located in the Art District of the colonial center of San Jose del Cabo, a luxurious resort city on the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula. The remodeling project was completed in 2016.
The result is a no frills accommodation option for more carefree travelers who wish adventure and culture over luxurious comfort. The 6 apartments were turned into 8 hotel rooms, a staff kitchen, office, laundry, guest coffee bar, and retail space. During the renovation process, only the original structure was preserved, and all aluminum windows, ceramic tiles, lighting, wooden closets, doors, fixtures, and architectural flourishes. In exchange, the architectural team added partition walls, larger windows, custom steel rolling doors, rustic concrete floors, a fire pit, a bar, a swimming pool, a hammock tower, a food cart patio, and an event space. The new landscaping program included crushed gravel, locally made bricks, and the preservation of fifteen seventy five year old palms original to the property.
The result is a hotel that feels close to nature while still providing basic comforts like air conditioning and electricity.
