We all have in mind an image of a perfect home an it’s usually a place full of love, a place where we feel comfortable and where we’re surrounded by the things we love most. For a couple from Seattle, that image became reality when they finally decided to buy an old Tudor-style house that they’ve been observing for over 10 years. They’ve already seen it in all seasons and they knew that with some professional help they could turn it into a home that they could grow old into.
The help came from DeForest Architects who worked with NB Design Group and Keith Geller Landscape Design to give the house and the garden a complete makeover. Both the new owners and the architects agreed that the architecture of the house should be preserved so the exterior was kept almost intact, with a few alternations, most of them at the back. The proximity of the house to Lake Washington inspired the architects to open up the back facade to these views.
The interior of the house was reorganized and remodeled, becoming a modern environment that takes full advantage of its location and in particular by the views of the lake. To make that happen, the architects removed the existing ceiling beams and elevated the ceilings, thus allowing the windows to become larger.
As a general observation, the interior design of the house is clean and simple, being defined by a nice warmth and an overall coziness. It’s all due to a perfect harmonization between the furnishing and decorations chosen by the interior designers and all the personal items of the owners which include an extensive collection of books and lots of items with sentimental value which they’ve gathered over the years.
There’s a good reason why the architects named this The Book House. It’s not just because of all the books displayed on shelves in the living room and hallway but also because of all the cozy reading nooks that are sprinkled throughout the house (in corners and in front of the windows). In addition to that, there are also a bunch of subtle elements that turn this house into a live-in bookcase, like the custom wallpaper on the staircase wall which features favorite quotes selected by all the family members. As you can see, this really is a dream home, specifically tailored for its owners.
