3SHOEBOX House is a contemporary home located in the Trnovo district of Ljubljana, Slovenia and designed by OFIS Architects, a Slovenian firm that was founded and is headed by two Harvard architecture professors. The home was designed in 2017, and covers a ground area of 228 square meters.
The home is actually a renovation of a home that was originally constructed in 1934 by the architect Emil Navinsek for his two unmarried sisters who lived in it together, sharing a space that consisted of only 50 square meters on each level.
The exterior of the home is clad in dark wood – a practice that is typical in the area and in the street where the structure is located. The first level has large glass windows, though the surrounding landscaping program includes pine trees that cover these windows, securing the home’s privacy. The home’s unique architecture continues for another two levels, with structural blocks that protrude from different sides, creating a modern and dynamic building.
The interior is imposingly minimalistic, with clean wooden floors and a concrete ceiling. The furnishings are all done in neutral tones, and the natural light that seeps in through the glass walls keep the space feeling airy and luminous.
