The decks and patios we’re accustomed with are most often made of wood but that’s not a global trend. There are regions where the concrete patio concept is preferred. The reasons for that are numerous and include the fact that concrete patios and decks are basically maintenance-free and very durable. They also have a very clean look which suits most modern and contemporary homes. Although it lacks the warmth wood usually offers, concrete tends to be more practical overall. We gathered here a bunch of deck designs that showcase some of these characteristics.

In 2013 Elías Rizo Arquitectos designed Casa VR, a residence located in Jalisco, Mexico. Its large concrete patio accommodates a spacious lounge area furnished with an L-shaped sectional that facing the garden on one side and a fire pit on the other.

A cool detail about this family residence is the seamless transition between the indoor living area and the outdoor patio. This is possible thanks to the polished concrete flooring which extends outside and maintains the same level, forming a raised platform protected by a wooden roof. This is a design by Justine Hugh-Jones.

It’s possible to combine both wood and concrete and to use these materials for different sections of the home and its surrounding outdoor spaces. This is a design by architect Guido Costantino. The residence is located in Oakville, Canada and its raised concrete patio extends to frame the swimming pool, being flanked on one side by a wooden deck that runs alongside the interior spaces, being protected by a cantilevered roof with built-in lighting.

Perched on a steep cliff in Isla Blanca, Ibiza, this house offers extraordinary views of the sea. It belongs to an art collector and it was built back in the 1980s and recently redesigned by architect and designer Luis Laplace. The connection between the indoor spaces and the smooth concrete patio and the views is very strong and the transition is seamless.

Although concrete lacks the warmth that wood usually displays, there are other ways to ensure a comfortable and pleasant environment out on a deck. Bestor Architecture designed a beautiful stone wall with a built-in outdoor fireplace for this house they built in California. Although the concrete patios have a rather cold look, the ambiance is surprisingly warm and welcoming.

Stamped concrete patios are appreciated for how clean they look and this residence is a perfect example. It was a project by Canny Design and it’s located in Victoria, Australia. This is the patio that links its interior living spaces to the garden. The choice of materials, finishes and colors suits it well.

You can get the best of both world if you combine a concrete patio and a wooden fence. It’s what Klopf Architecture did when designing this home in Palo Alto, California. They gave it a zen backyard that’s easy to maintain and that feels open, cozy, welcoming and fresh. The occasional touch of color comes in the form of furniture, cushions and flowers.

Sometimes a concrete patio is simply the best choice from all points of view. Take this summer house that Sinas Architects designed in Sérifos, Greece. Its fortress-like stone walls blend seamlessly with the deck. The colors and textures are in perfect sync.

In addition to a large concrete patio, this contemporary residence in San Diego, California also has concrete floors and ceilings which allow it to feel surprisingly open and well-connected to the outdoors. Those huge sliding glass doors definitely help as well. The house was designed by architect Jonathan Segal.

Balance and continuity are important when dealing with a small space. This house, for example, was completed by MCK Architects. It’s located in New South Wales, Australia. Sandwiched between two neighboring properties, the house has a small backyard and a small deck that seamlessly connects it to the polished concrete floor interior. Also, there’s a minimalist concrete island/ bar out on the deck as well.

In the case of the Gubbins House designed by Antonio Zaninovic Architecture Studio in collaboration with Rees Roberts & Partners, there’s a continuous juxtaposition of contrasting elements. The concrete interior courtyard patio is paired with a pond and a tree that grows right through it and the terraced gardens that surround the house are accompanied by concrete planters and other matching elements.

Blending the indoor and outdoor is not always but it’s always exciting to find custom ways to do it. When designing this residence located in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Studio MK27 & Lair Reis made sure to give it vast openings and to allow panoramic views of the surroundings. At the same time, they ensured a seamless transition by extending the concrete floored living spaces out in the yard, creating this minimalist lounge deck.
