This old home, covering an area of 280 square meters, was renovated in the year 2013 by Charlotte von Moos and Florian Sauter from the architectural firm Sauter von Moos. The home is located in Basel, a city on the shores of the Rhine River, in northwestern Switzerland.

Basel is a uniquely multicultural town due to its location – located where the Swiss, French, and German borders meet, it also has suburbs both in France and Germany, and is internationally renowned for its museums.

The architects sought to gently renovate and restore the existing structure with the purpose of maintaining the charm and exquisite architecture of the original structure, built in the 1930s. To do so, they enlarged the building through a series of small additions that follow the logic of the existing spatial division into small rooms, improve the home’s energy balance by modernizing its technical installations, allowing it to move on to using only renewable energies.

In the interior, the new style used adds a sense of serenity and calmness to the home, while the vestiges of the old home can still be felt as one walks through it, an eternal companion to the new home.
