This wonderful house is located in West Woodburn, Northumberland, on the border of the National Park, in England. The owner was involved in every stage of this self-build project with the help of Dan Kerr of MawsonKerr Architects to create a sustainable and accessible house for his parents who previously resided in a traditional farmhouse and wanted to continue living on the same site, but wished to have an outstanding piece of architecture that would create an accessible, comfortable, highly energy efficient home, using local and traditional materials in a contemporary way.

The newly built two storey element sits on the footprint of a demolished barn and connects to the existing single storey barn, which will be converted into sleeping quarters and home office.

In the same way, they wanted the new building to maintain a clean, contemporary architecture that was distinct from, but respectful to, the much loved traditional farmhouse and neighboring buildings.

In its interior, we see that the house is configured with the bedrooms on the ground floor and the living areas located above. This way we can count on the best views of the surrounding countryside.

It has a large number of windows and skylights, allowing natural light to reach the bright and neutrally decorated interior.
