The kitchen is one of the most exciting spaces in a home and one that requires a lot of attention to details during the design and planning process. Choosing a layout is a very important step. You might not be able to make this decision from the start so try first to get your priorities in order to make a list of all the elements that you want to include in the design and ways to do it. You should also pick a style that you want to use…this can also help you find the ideal layout later on.

5 popular kitchen layouts

Some kitchen layouts are better suited for small spaces while others are better adapted for large areas. For example, a one-wall kitchen is usually the way to go in a small home. This type of kitchen puts everything within easy reach and keeps all or most of the appliances and storage spaces on a single wall. It works well for open floor plans as it can be combined with the living and dining areas. Sometimes it’s possible to add a mobile island or a folding table and to gain more storage and workspace this way. Still, a one-wall kitchen layout doesn’t usually offer much in terms of storage and counter space.

A galley kitchen is more or less similar to a one-wall kitchen but with double the storage and counter space. This type of layout is considered to be the most efficient for cooking and that’s why a lot of restaurants adopt the style. A galley kitchen is long and narrow and has appliances and counters on either side. There’s no room here for a table or an island and that gives the kitchen a lack of social character. In addition, interaction between two or more people in a galley kitchen is limited and often awkward. in a home, unless you open the kitchen to the rest of the public spaces by removing a wall or a door, this will remain an enclosed space with little to no connection to the rest of the house.

L-shaped kitchens are the most popular and also some of the most versatile of all types

If you want a social kitchen, one that allows smooth interaction between people and that feels more open, perhaps the most popular kitchen layout of all is for you. We’re talking about the L-shaped kitchen. Part of the reason why this is such a popular layout is the fact that it’s very versatile and adaptable. It works great with open plan living and dining areas and it can also serve as an eat-in kitchen if you add a table with chairs or an island with seating.

Add another row of cabinets and appliances to an L-shaped layout and you get a U-shaped kitchen. This is a type that looks and feels airy and offers lots of storage but is in fact quite small and not as versatile as other kitchens. The reason why we say that is because you can’t add an island or a table to a U-shaped kitchen without making it look cluttered and tiny.On the other hand, you can plenty of room for cabinets and large appliances and there’s often a window here as well which ensures an open and bright decor.

There’s also such a thing as a G-shaped kitchen. It’s actually a different version of the U-shaped layout, one which features a peninsula attached to one side of the U. The peninsula partially encloses the kitchen so it’s important to make sure it’s not too long so you can easily get in and out. There’s absolutely no way you can add an island to this kitchen since you’d have to room to move around it and it would make everything very difficult and awkward.

How to design a kitchen

Traditionally, when planning the layout and the design of a kitchen, the focus falls on the kitchen triangle. Maybe you’ve heard about this term before…it refers to the connection between the refrigerator, the stove and the sink. Obviously, you don’t need to stick to a triangle shape of you don’t want to. Feel free to optimize your kitchen space however you want, based on how much room you have and on your particular needs. Do, however, pay attention to the appliances.

There’s a lot to think about when picking the appliances for a kitchen. Size matters but so does energy-efficiency, color and style in general. Before you make a decision, figure out what your priorities are? Do you want a bigger dishwasher or more storage space and do you really need a large refrigerator or would you rather use that space for something else? It’s important to have the kitchen tailor-made for its users in order for it to be as comfortable and as efficient as possible.

Another detail you might have trouble with can be the distinction between a kitchen island and a peninsula. The island is great if you have the room for it and a peninsula can be a better choice is a variety of situations. If you want, you can have a peninsula with no cabinets around it and this way it can look more like an island. Either way, you can use the island/ peninsula in a variety of different ways and it’s up to you to find the best option.
