This private residence was formerly a post 1991 firehouse, and was repurposed by Terry & Terry in 2016. It sits atop the Eastbay Mountain Range, in Oakland, the largest city in Alameda County in California, USA. From its perch, it has unobstructed views over the Southwest Bay and the Golden Gate. It was designed for a young family who wished to have a home with an open plan and different areas that communicated easily with one another.

Lush vegetation shelters the property, providing it a strong sense of privacy while at the same time giving it a strong feeling of coziness. The home’s walls are made of rich wood, which helps give the building continuity through its materials, making it a part of the exterior. The rich wood continues further into the interior, coating floors and the curved ceiling, bringing the exterior inside.

Due to its location, the home suffers wide temperature ranges and some extreme weather. The warping on the ceiling serves to aid in ventilation, keeping the air moving and cooling down the interior.

Stairs take us to the second level, where we’ll find a media projection room, a bedroom, and an office area.
