In the world of interior design and decor, mirrors are considered to be pretty similar to works of art in the sense that they enhance the decor of the space in a unique way. Long mirrors, round mirrors, oversized mirrors and every other type can become decorative items and even focal points in our interior decors. Mirrors are pretty simple and straight-forward but that doesn’t mean anyone can be successful when decorating with them. It’s rather easy to overdo it or to fail in creating the desired effect.

Using large and long mirrors in small and tiny rooms is a great idea, this being a great way to create the illusion of a larger space and a way to add depth to a room. Mirrors in general are meant to reflect light and to open up spaces from an aesthetic and spatial point of view. They’re often used as a means to enhance a simple decor and to add glamour to various types of environments.

Complement a straight-lined sofa or sectional with one or several mirrors that have smooth curves or circular forms
Add a large mirror to a small cabinet to create a chic makeup vanity
Let a mirror lean against a wall for a casual visual effect that suits modern and contemporary settings
Instead of a single large mirror you could have a group of several smaller ones arranged in an interesting manner
MAke a bathroom seem larger and brighter with a wide wall mirror placed behind the vanity
A large mirror can also add cohesion to a bathroom that has two separate sinks or washbasins
The opposite version would be a double sink vanity combined with two separate wall mirrors

It’s important not to organize and display mirrors in a random fashion. It’s best to make sure they reflect something relevant such as a beautiful view, a nice piece of artwork or the light coming through a window. Similarly, you can also use mirrors to reflect the light of a candle, a sconce, a pendant lamp or even a chandelier. It’s all about the placement of the mirror so you need to be strategic in this sense.

The mirror can match the vanity of cabinet in order to form a cohesive combo
The light in a bathroom shouldn’t come from directly above the mirror. Side sconces or pendant lamps are much better
Large, framed mirrors are excellent for hallways, dressing rooms but also living spaces that could use a touch of glamour
The placement of the mirror is very important every single time

It could also be interesting to make a mirror the focal point of a room. Once again, it’s all about the placement although size, form and style also matter. To create a casual effect, rest a mirror against a wall or let it lean on a piece of furniture. You can also get a freestanding mirror which you can position anywhere you want without the need for extra support.

Make sure the area where you place the mirrors is well lit otherwise the decor would lack something
A mirror can be used to complete a decor or to make a certain area stand out in an interesting and unique way
Groups of mirrors can often be better suited than a single large mirror placed n the same context
MAke sure the mirror reflects something significant, something that you want to emphasize

Like we said before, it’s easy to go overboard when decorating with mirrors, especially in rooms that don’t really require them such as the kitchen or the bedroom. Take into consideration how practical or flattering having a mirror here would be. For instance, a mirrored backsplash would pose problems because of the water marks and maintenance in general. As for the bedroom, the mirror should not be facing the bed unless you really like the way you look in the morning.

Place a mirror behind the living room sofa to draw attention to that particular area or to reflect the light coming through the window
Use mirrors to add depth to a small room and to create the illusion of a larger and more open space
Bedrooms don’t usually need mirror but if you insist on having one, place it behind the bed

Some contexts seem ideal for mirrors. One example can be a narrow hallway or a staircase corridor. One or more mirrors would brighten up the space, making it seem wider and larger. Of course, different types of mirrors can be used in different ways and for different types of spaces. An oversized mirror is a space such as the living room or the dining area has an effect similar to that of  a large-scale art piece.

Use mirrors to fill a room or to create a dramatic effect that lets you achieve the desired ambiance
Add mirrors to those areas of your home that lack sufficient natural light, such as the entryway, hallways or bathroom
Be creative and make a simple mirror stand out, either with a frame or back lighting
A bathroom mirror with a frame that lights up is pretty practical and desirable
Think of your mirror as a large piece of artwork that you want to display and highlight in an elegant way
In some cases it’s the frame that stands out more than the mirror itself
Always use mirror to your advantage, to compensate for the lack of natural light or for a small floor plan

Mirrors can be used in every room of the house and in each case a special set of details needs to be taken into consideration. In the bathroom, for instance, mirrors also have a practical side so they need to be positioned at a comfortable height and the light has to fall at a flattering angle. Entryways need mirrors too. They let us do a final checkup before exiting the house. The rest of the rooms use mirrors as primarily decorative elements.
